Many of our technical equipment and machines use the advantages associated with gas or liquid flows: for mass or energy transport, for power transmission or the utilisation of flow forces to overcome gravity. Often we are not even aware, where flow processes occur.
Only when they get out of control, that is, when they leave the normally accepted level, do they enter our consciousness. Then, however, mostly effective and with sometimes serious consequences. When in 1999 at the 24h race of Le Mans three Mercedes CLR took off from the track like badly balanced paper planes while they were crossing a bump and whirled through the air, the spectators were breathless. The aerodynamics, which was supposed to push the racing cars to the ground, did exactly the opposite in this situation.
In order that the fluid mechanical processes in our devices and machines do not lead to uncontrollable operating states, it is necessary to understand the behavior of the fluids.
Ununderstood flow phenomena can endanger safety.
An unsafe system must be repaired or taken off the market!
Flows are very complex and can hardly be detected analytically. The measurement possibilities are also very limited or although very complex. The numerical CFD simulation offers the only alternative to make the flow processes visible and understandable for the calculation engineer. Only in this way can he gain a comprehensive picture and explore the limits of what is feasible.
