Optimization
Nothing is more constant than the constant change. Nature has developed many strategies to adapt to continuous transformation. The best known of these strategies is evolution. Nature goes a very wasteful way in its optimization: it sends an almost endless number of individuals into its merciless selection process.
Another very exciting and inspiring optimization strategy of nature is permanently taking place in our body. Our bones adapt to external loads. If these increase, the bone begins to build up material, if they decrease, cell structure is immediately broken down again to save weight and energy. This characteristic led to complications with the first hip joint implants. The spike, which was inserted into the femur, took over all the forces that the bone otherwise had to bear. The organism reacted by dissolving the surrounding bone, which made the implant loose and a new operation necessary.
The engineers and scientists of the development and research departments also try to constantly improve their products, with the difference, however, that it is not possible for them to produce and evaluate an infinite number of prototypes for economic reasons. So they have to hope that they understand your products with only a few attempts and come very close to the actual optimum with the improvement ideas derived from them.
The "trial and error" method is only partially successful with a limited number of experiments.
However, "partly successful" is not sufficient in international competition!
Simulation offers development departments the unique opportunity to imitate nature's wasteful approach. With the help of intelligent algorithms, it is now proven practice to relieve the developer and send the computer on a more or less independent search for an optimal solution for a system. It does not matter whether it is a challenge in a single field or an interdisciplinary task.
